POST LITHOTRIPSY PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDELINES
For the next 24 hours, do not
- Drive a vehicle
- Operate any machinery or electrical appliances
- Make any important decisions
- Drink alcoholic beverages
- Take any tranquilizers or sleeping pills unless approved by your physician
DIET/FLUID INTAKE
- It is recommended to start with a light meal and advance as tolerated.
- Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of clear liquids per day to aid in the passage of stone particles. Most stone patients will benefit from a continued high fluid intake and urine output indefinitely, even after the particles are gone. This may help prevent new stone formation.
ACTIVITY/WORK
- Your physician will let you know when you may resume normal activities and return to work.
- Note: Walking and moving about aids in the passage of stone particles; however, avoid sports or really strenuous exercise until there is no blood in your urine, or when your physician approves.
MEDICATIONS
- Your physician will let you know when you may resume your prescription medication(s) and if there are any that you should not resume taking.
- Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (i.e., ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin) unless prescribed by your physician.
- You may have received prescription medications after your procedure. Please take them according to the instructions.
- Note: Avoid driving, alcohol consumption or making important decisions if you are taking prescription pain medication.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
- Strain urine and save sand particles.
- NOTE: Blood in your urine is expected for a few days after your procedure. If a stent is in place, urine may be bloody until it is removed.
CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN IF:
- You have a temperature of 101° F or greater;
- You have persistent nausea and vomiting;
- Your pain is unrelieved with pain medication; and/or
- You are unable to urinate.
FOLLOW UP CARE
- Call your physician to make a follow up appointment.
- Bring all x-rays (if they are given to you) and any stone particles you may have collected with you on your follow-up visit.
- You may be instructed to get a KUB x-ray just prior to your follow-up appointment. Ask your physician’s office to schedule your KUB x-ray.
If you have problems or questions relating to your recovery, call your physician or go to the nearest Emergency Room. |
